ChildSafe South Africa recently took a proactive step in community engagement, when an invitation arrived to deliver a general safety talk at a public health facility in Paarl, it became more than an event—it was an opportunity to contribute to the government’s health promotion objectives.
Traditionally, ChildSafe engages communities through Early Childhood Development centre training. However, this time, we went directly to the heart of the community, addressing new mothers firsthand. On Friday, August 2, Executive Director, Zaitoon Rabaney, and Social Auxiliary Worker, Ntomby Beko, engaged directly with new mothers in Paarl. The topic? General child safety—a crucial conversation that resonated well with mothers attending a World Breastfeeding Week event held at the public health facility.
Safety Across Developmental Stages
Infants (0–12 months): New parents received guidance on safe sleep practices, babyproofing, and awareness of choking hazards. These essential tips empower these new mothers to create a secure environment for their little ones.
Toddlers (1–3 years): The focus shifted to securing furniture, age-appropriate toys, and kitchen safety. Toddlers’ curiosity knows no bounds, and ChildSafe emphasised preventive measures to keep them safe.
Preschoolers (3–5 years): Road safety took centre stage. Every step counts, and mothers learned about pedestrian awareness, navigating crosswalks, and the importance of holding hands near roads, reinforcing the need to instil safety habits early on.
School-Age Kids (6–12 years): As children grow, their safety needs evolve. Attendees received practical advice on seat belts and pedestrian safety to ensure a safe journey for every child.
Key Takeaways
Safety is a Team Effort: Parents, caregivers, and communities—we’re in this together. By creating a safety net, we protect our children collectively.
Knowledge Empowers: Armed with practical tips, the mothers left the event feeling confident. Small changes in behaviour can prevent significant accidents.
