To launch October Mobility Month and celebrate 70 years of Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement, the Western Cape Mobility Department hosted its inaugural Mobility Open Day at the Vangate Shared Services Centre in Athlone. This historic milestone brought together provincial leaders, traffic law enforcement personnel, community advocates, and civil society partners to showcase vital public services. As a dedicated non-profit championing child health promotion across South Africa, ChildSafe SA actively participated to highlight how cross-sector partnerships advance community safety and childhood injury prevention.

ChildSafe SA was represented on the ground by dedicated team members Gadijah Barron, Mthikazi Madikane, and Sindisiwe Zungu, who managed a dynamic, interactive community activation stall throughout the day. Operating alongside provincial traffic exhibitions that featured official highway patrol vehicles and motorcycles, the team delivered practical demonstrations directly to those in attendance. Their interactive sessions demonstrated critical pedestrian safety measures, child passenger awareness, safe medication storage, and fire prevention techniques using sand-weighted candle jars to mitigate home fire risks. These practical interventions reaffirmed why ChildSafe SA was recognised with Africa Excellence Awards honours as the Best Children’s Health Advocacy Organisation 2026, translating national safety priorities into everyday community protection.

The event featured formal addresses from provincial dignitaries who highlighted the vital link between law enforcement, public cooperation, and grassroots education. Acting Head of Department Deidre Ribbonnaar reflected on seven decades of service since 1956, honouring frontline officers while tracing the department’s transformation, professionalism, and diversity. Chief Director of Traffic Management Maxine Bezuidenhout emphasised that mobility is ultimately about connecting people and protecting lives, noting that effective road safety depends heavily on active public compliance and trusted civil society collaborations. The Honourable Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, spent time engaging directly with the ChildSafe SA team at their exhibition stand, commending their tireless community outreach and reiterating that safeguarding vulnerable road users requires sustained empathy, shared responsibility, and dedicated teamwork.

Through ongoing collaboration with provincial authorities, ChildSafe SA remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that every child journeys safely, whether walking to school, travelling in vehicles, or playing within their neighbourhoods. By bridging government policy with grassroots injury prevention, ChildSafe SA and the Western Cape Mobility Department continue to build a protective shield around our children, ensuring that the legacy of provincial traffic services remains firmly focused on saving lives.
