CAPE TOWN, 16 January 2024 – As families journey back from their holiday destinations, it is crucial to prioritize road safety, especially with the impending start of the new school term for children. ChildSafe South Africa underscores the significance of road safety measures, particularly in the context of road crashes being the second leading cause of death for children aged 5-14 years in our country.
Amidst the return from the festive period, child injuries such as car accidents are unfortunately prevalent. Therefore, it is indispensable for drivers to not only focus on child car seat safety but also to embody patience, courtesy, and responsible driving habits on the roads.
In addition to ensuring children are securely fastened in their car seats, it is equally vital for drivers to observe the following road safety principles:
Be a mindful and patient driver:Save
Adhering to speed limits, remaining aware of pedestrians, and being patient on the road, especially in residential areas, is vital. Embracing patience and courtesy while driving can contribute to a safer and more harmonious road environment for all.
Check your child’s car seat before travel:
A staggering 73% of car seats are not used or installed correctly. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure that your child’s car seat is properly installed before hitting the road.
Emphasise the importance of buckling up for all passengers, even for short trips, and consider using booster seats for older children until they reach the age of 12.
Correct installation and appropriate usage of car seats are essential for child safety during travel. It is recommended to ensure that the car seat is installed and utilised properly for your child’s protection.
Obey the “Keep Left, Pass Right” rule:
Adhering to this traffic rule ensures smoother and safer traffic flow, allowing for a more predictable and organised driving experience for all road users.
By wholeheartedly embracing road safety measures and fostering a patient and courteous approach to driving, we can work together to create a secure and harmonious environment for our children as we make the journey back home.
Safe travels and best wishes for the start of the new school term!
